Ward and his robot Mote escaped a dying world. Its core was rotting — a spreading infection that killed everything it touched. Ward pulled a living fragment of that core and used it to bring Mote to life.
Now they crew the Lodestar, a generational ship carrying eleven thousand sleepers to a new star. The voyage takes two hundred years. Everyone sleeps through it. Ward's job is to chart the course before he joins them.
But the infection came aboard.
